Patient Stories

Real journeys of strength, recovery, and hope under specialist care.

A Story of Recovery: Back to Health, Back to Work

Case Summary

A 26-year-old male IT professional presented with a history of recurrent pneumonia for 3 months, accompanied by loss of appetite, weight loss, chronic diarrhoea, and extreme weakness. On evaluation, he tested HIV positive, with a CD4 count of only 7 cells/Β΅L, indicating advanced immunosuppression.

Further investigations, including chest and abdominal CT scans, were normal. However, colonoscopy revealed CMV colitis (Cytomegalovirus infection of the colon), a common opportunistic infection in severely immunocompromised patients. He was started on Ganciclovir for CMV colitis and subsequently initiated on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) under specialist supervision.

Treatment & Recovery

Within weeks of starting ART, his diarrhoea subsided, appetite improved, and he began to gain weight gradually. Over the following months, his health continued to improve steadily. After 6 months of treatment, his CD4 count increased to 171 cells/Β΅L β€” a remarkable sign of immune recovery.

He has now regained his strength, resumed normal activities, and returned to work in Hyderabad, continuing ART with regular follow-up.

Key Lesson

πŸ‘‰ Early diagnosis and specialist care in HIV make a life-changing difference.
With timely treatment and adherence to ART, patients can recover fully and return to a healthy, productive life.

Patient Story: Overcoming TB and HIV β€” A Complete Recovery

Age/Sex: 37-year-old male

Occupation: Hotel Owner

Location: Kolkata

The Challenge

A 37-year-old hotel owner from Kolkata presented with prolonged fever, significant weight loss, and loss of appetite. On evaluation, he tested HIV positive. Further examination revealed enlarged neck lymph nodes.

Diagnosis

A biopsy of the neck glands confirmed Tuberculosis (TB). Soon after, he also tested sputum positive for TB. Additionally, he developed CMV (Cytomegalovirus) retinitis, a viral eye infection that can occur when the immune system is very weak.

He was started on anti-TB medicines, and although his lymph nodes initially enlarged (a known immune reaction), they later reduced in size with continued therapy. After 10 days, HIV treatment (ART) was started under specialist supervision.

Treatment and Progress

With regular treatment and close follow-up, the patient showed steady improvement. His appetite and strength returned, and his eye infection completely healed. Over the next few months, his CD4 count increased from 74 to 125 cells/Β΅L, showing significant immune recovery. He continues ART and TB therapy with good tolerance and excellent response.

Lesson Learned

πŸ’‘ HIV-positive patients may have both TB and viral infections at the same time.
Early specialist care ensures timely diagnosis and complete recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is HIV Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)?
PEP is a preventive treatment that can stop HIV infection if started within 72 hours (preferably) and maximum within 7 days of exposure. It is highly efficacious and safe, making HIV nearly 100% preventable when administered early. We provide immediate PEP services at our clinic.
What is Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)?
PrEP is a daily medicine for HIV prevention for people at high risk. When taken consistently, PrEP can reduce the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99%. We provide PrEP counselling, prescription, and monitoring services.
Do you provide confidential HIV testing and treatment?
Yes, complete confidentiality is maintained for all HIV testing, counselling, and treatment services. Your privacy and dignity are our top priority. We provide a safe, non-judgmental environment for all patients.
What is U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable)?
U=U means that people with HIV who achieve and maintain an undetectable viral load through proper ART treatment cannot sexually transmit HIV to others. This is our treatment goal for all HIV patients - helping them achieve viral suppression and live healthy, normal lives.
Do you provide video consultation services?
Yes, we offer video conferencing consultations for patients across India who cannot visit the clinic in person. We also provide medicine courier services for patients outside Kolkata, ensuring continuity of care.
